welcome to my life

Hey world.
This could be a long post most likely confusing, stupid, sometimes off topic and all round crazy… Just saying…
I am typing this sitting on a top bunk waiting for a little spider that is just over my head to get away from the safety of being suspended in its web and instead find itself of the wall which in turn will result with my fist being slammed up against it most likely crushing it or at least making it unhappy enough to leave. So look forward to some sort of update on that!
With that out of the way, and the spider most likely terrified for his life given its impending doom, ill get on with how my world has been lately. When I decided to do these initially a few years ago I decided I’d stay honest and try give people an insight into what’s going on over here, So while I assure you all is fine now, I suppose I should start with the downside of late so I can get it out of the way and carry on with the fun stuff! The camping world has been quite a mixture of everything lately. Firstly for all the ex-counsellors who I sent a message to asking them so very politely to change their mind and come back to camp rather than what ever new adventure their life is taking them on, I do apologise. Now you may wonder why I’d apologise for that, well its because when I said I ‘politely’ just now, I probably should of said abused or harassed cause lets face it, I may have gotten out of hand trying to get my point across. I have found things tough of late given some of the people I spent the last 1 or 2 years with wont be returning and for the first time in a long time the world actually felt like a big place because they are now, and are going to stay, so far away. Now while I do still want you all to come back, I will do my best to say it in a nicer way. But while there was plenty going though my head to prompt this, some of which im sure many people could make arguments for me being assigned to a padded room, I managed to stop all that and now this world is once again my friend!
Now the weekend just gone was the closest to a long weekend that precamp, or camp itself, can get. As always we finish work at lunch on Saturday and have the Sunday off, which by the end of the week is most welcome, however this time we got a bonus day! Oh yeah look at me being excited for the simplest of things! It was memorial day here in USA, which camp did have a bbq and drinks up top to start the long weekend – just cause I apologised doesn’t mean I wont be trying to make you wish you were here exstaff! – now just another random fact ill throw in for anyone not coming back this year. The same night of our bbq up top, which yes I know is never called a bbq here, an unnamed Scotsman returner, who you may or may not remember, kind of extinguished a room and hallway just cause he could but has no recollection of the event. So yeah not a lot has changed here haha…
Sunday was the first full day off which was utilised very well! I was able to catch up with a friend from last year who lives near by – which is always awesome! –  Followed by making the most of not having to work – that’s a fancy way of saying I did absolutely nothing! – It ended with a brilliant end at the movies as a group of us went to see the avengers. To be honest I thought the hype of the movie was going to make it less exciting but it was fantastic. Don’t think ive actually laughed so much during an action movie but for anyone who has seen it im sure you understand why it couldn’t be helped. For all those who haven’t seen it… why not? Stop reading this and go right now, you can read the rest later, off you go.
For all those still here kudos to you and anyone who just got back from seeing the movie I hope you enjoyed it!

To add to a day well spent, the weather was fantastic! Id guess –
BAM!! Well that time has come and my crawly little companion found the wall and the bam of my fist met his body. I’m sad to say he will not be joining us in future posts.
- where was i… oh yeah id guess the temperature was just over mid 20s in the world of Celsius - and to all those still using Fahrenheit, catch up and use Celsius! – I don’t know for sure but that would be my guess.
Monday, being memorial day itself, was day off #2. It was a very unusual day, in a good way, and I question whether my morning serving of cherios had something put in them cause I was essentially bouncing off the walls all day, a little hyperactive and overall on cloud 9! While im no longer hyperactive, I still seem to be holding onto cloud 9. I used this day to get online although with this not being written I had nothing new to upload so was happy to just catch up on whats going on at home and chat to friends in England. Naturally with all the good luck going my way it was another awesome day.
As with all good things they must come to an end. And oh boy did they end when it was back to work… but ill get back to that. Today (Tuesday) we were back into precamp and for the first part of it I was back in the truck – ute - moving things around. The fact the truck doesn’t have an air conditioner isn’t usually an issue. Except when you have a day like today! Im convinced it got to 30degrees today cause wow it was hotter than the average! The precamp staff has been replaced with lobsters thanks to the lovely redness they are all now sporting. As I always do, ill be blaming my mum for the fact I got burnt today due to the genes I have from her and her red hair. But if all goes as I expect, it will take two days and ill be brown – thanks dad.
Today was that fateful day that anyone who has done precamp dreads. The job that isn’t mentioned in hope that maybe they will forget and we wont have to do it. Yes that’s right ex-precampers out there… today was tennis courts! Or at least the start of. ill try give an accurate rundown of why such a simple sounding job is, not to put to fine a point on it, hell. Firstly there isn’t just one or two courts. There is… well to be honest I don’t know but id guess at 15? At the end of every summer planks of wood or all shapes, sizes and widths are put over the lines to try protect them from the elements. Being a clay courts they do tend to shift a little as well. To ensure these planks don’t move rocks, of all shapes and sizes, are put on top. Job 1: remove all planks and rocks… after that is done we have to start raking the courts to get all of the little rocks that have come to the surface out of there. In the space of I think 4 hours today we got the equivalent of just over one whole court done… and im not even sure if we did it right to be honest. This is partly due to people slowly finding their own way to successfully dislodge the rocks but also thanks to the heat we needed drink breaks much more often than usual. Job 2: get the rocks out and try not to go insane while doing it… thankfully time was up and we had to stop for the day which meant jump in the lake cause its so hot!! Woo!! It was only a short jump in due to a storm that was on its way finally getting close enough to mean no one in the water. And when it comes accompanied by tornado warnings and looks like the rapture I think its fair enough that we just go up to eat and then stay inside for the night.
Which brings me to now. I sit here on a bed, a storm thundering away outside, lights occasionally flickering, wondering if any of the spiders friends saw what I did and now plot against me throughout the night or maybe will just bide their time to exact their revenge. What ever the situation may be im glad to say precamp, with all its tennis court, burnt body, rollercoaster week and lack of returners… is still pretty awesome

big wheels keep on turning

Hey world,

After what could only be described as a perfect start to my travels, things kind of came back down to earth, or more specifically the bus did. We were an hour away from Lee, Massachusetts – which for those who don’t know, its the place camp picks us up from – when the bus got a flat. The bus driver being the nice man he is pulled into a McDonalds instead of just stoping on the side of the road so we were able to get off the bus and I was able to email camp and tell them why I wasn’t there and please don’t forget about me! We were told to expect a 30-45 minute delay since they had both called for a replacement bus and also for someone to fix the currently disabled bus. The waiting time ended up being an hour and 15mins, and naturally both of our rescue options arrived at the same time.

So it was a complete transfer over to the new bus, since it was the faster option, and then we were told we’d be taking a different route to save a little bit of time. By the end of the whole experience we ended up getting into Lee an hour behind schedule. The return to camp this year had a very simular feeling as last year only perhaps a little stronger. Once arriving it really does feel like I never left and it’s just like returning home – sorry mum but it is my second home given I spend a good chunk of the year here. No matter how elaborate of descriptive I get I doubt I could ever put it into words so I wont try but it’s a nice feeling given im on the other side of the world.

We really do have an army of people this year for the opening of precamp. I think the number I heard was 32 people. Which when I arrived last year, which was last week of precamp and not the beginning, I think we had only just got to 40 people after they started with less than 10. So in theory things should go smoother. Thankfully so far everyone seems very happy to do the long seemingly endless and sometimes boring jobs. Anyone who has ever had to rake a forest to remove the leaves would understand that its not the most exciting job, even though I find it very therapeutic. The new people seem to see it as pointless job, just like anyone else doing it for the first time, but after seeing the difference it makes I like to think they are on board. The advantage of having people here that are so keen to get the work done is that we are getting things done fast, which given my love for efficiency is fantastic since ive been running some of the crews. Its not all smooth sailing though. Due to it being my third summer here I was told id be running a truck crew where I would be driving the ute. Now that doesn’t sound hard but when the wheel is on the other side and I have to stay on the right of the roads its not exactly a walk in the park. Oh and just to add to my fears. After only just starting the session steam started coming of the front. I later found out this was caused by the fan deciding not to work causing it to overheat. Amazingly I was still allowed to drive the next day but this time it went off without an issue. By the end of the day it was very hot so still something that should be looked into but at least we got the work done

The weather has been a bit up and down but overall it has been decent with only short bursts of rain while we are working and most of it coming when we aren’t out so that doesn’t really matter. It certainly has been better than my 15hrs in new york when it just rained all the time. Hopefully things go well for the rest of precamp and by the time its all coming to an end we are well ahead of schedule and not pressed for time and stressed.

Camp already is going to be very different this year… now its just a waiting game to see just how much and where

Take care all

concrete jungle where dreams are made

Hey world,

--side note-- As with most of my first posts this will be broken up as I type it at different times on my way to new york. Also, as with most posts I do get distracted and go off track a little bit or just ignore the laws of grammar completely. Im not a writer I just do it for fun don’t go expecting anything too good here--

I feel that I have to start with this again just to make sure I don’t receive any messages or emails asking why people weren’t tagged in this to be able to read it for those reading it on facebook. I am simply tagging a mixture of people that might be interested in it but also at least one from each part of my life so everyone will see its up rather than going through and choosing you all.

With that out of the way im happy to say that it is finally the day that I go away… after the first two rhyming words I thought id go on with it but for don’t worry ill be doing all in my power to ensure I never write anything like that again. For anyone who has read what I write while im away will surely know that getting from Melbourne to new york is usually one of the most painful experiences of my trip. Year one had an hour delay which lead to me running through LAX to get on the connecting flight. Much like the disaster of year two with the long delay and change of connecting flights, which just happened to also result in me running through LAX.

I’m not the kind of person who believes in signs when small things happen but things didn’t start well when the night before im flying out im told online checking in wont let me cause the information they have about me says I don’t have what I need to travel. My visa and I disagreed and it was Luke 1 – Qantas 0 after I explained that to them over the phone. History, or even the last 12 months, has made me sceptical as to whether I would ever have a normal experience when flying to America. Well to enjoy the use of a cliché, third times a charm – having said that if things had gone different I would have been going for ‘things come in threes’ but I guess I can save that for a rainy day. The trip to the airport was met with no traffic at all, checking in my bag I had no issues either with the weight of it coming to just over 18kg - kudos to my sister sarah and her freakish ability to be human weighing scales for guessing that correctly – while waiting to board I managed to be able to chat with a nice woman from Canada and a guy from America rather than listen to people bitch about Qantas service, which I usually am nice enough to do in my head and then vent to the world via social media. But the biggest thing of them all… I was on the plane and we were taxiing out of the airport on time. ill give you a moment so you can re-read that cause I certainly hope you realise how big of an achievement that is.

While I brag about the current stretch of good luck and happy times I must admit that I am still on the flight from Melbourne to LAX – scheduled to arrive on time – so I shouldn’t go getting carried away since I don’t know what is around the next corner. Fingers are crossed the way things have started are only a sign of what’s to come!

Im currently sitting in LAX. feel free to skip this next part if you must but given I am always ready to jump on anything that goes wrong on the way out here I think its only fair that I give credit when its due. I cannot think of a time when I have flown with Qantas, or any other airline and had an easier time of it than what has happened so far. Not only did we leave on time but we have arrived 30 minutes earlier than scheduled! That accompanied by the overly enthusiastic air hostess that was always ready to help certainly is a nice change than the stressing out and running that I usually greet LAX with. Now I actually have to wait an hour till its boarding time for my connecting flight. Ill be sure to wrap this up and get it online after I get to new york but so far so good!

At the hostel and the only thing that held me up was bad weather in new york making us land a little later. Cant complain with that. Although who ever was kind enough to put something heavy enough on my bad to slightly bend the back so the handle doesn’t come out any more im not impressed and be happy everything has gone well so far or id make a much bigger deal out of it! Well new york hasn’t changed. I still fear for my life the entire time im in the shuttle has the driver plays cut off the traffic as if they were in grand theft auto or need for speed but thankfully its just expected here so the other cars are ready for it. Now I get to enjoy a sleep tonight and hopefully wake up without jetlag! Not likely but wow it would be nice huh.

Well I guess ill leave it there. Forgive all the areas of this that don’t make sense – there is always a couple – it is my longest day of the year after all given its still Monday for me.

Take care

no song lyrics for this one

Hey World,

Now i know this is titled 'world travels in writing' (for those on the blog rather than on facebook) but for some reason I felt like writing a bit leading up to the travels so here we go.

It would appear that the time for me writing endless, somewhat crazy, and definitely long winded - as this sentence is evidence of - blogs is fast approaching. It is under a month until it is time for me to once again head off to America to love life working at a summer camp. Time at some has been very different this time around with adjustments from arrival right through to leaving again, but I'll come back to that. I seem to be unnaturally well prepared for the upcoming trip, which is very unlike me. usually i just wait till one or two days before and then it all just happens to fall into place. who knows maybe that will still happen, fingers are crossed it doesn't though! The biggest hope i have is that my shocking run of bad luck when it comes to departure times out of Melbourne does no continue and I can either leave on time or even just a little bit late. Not the hour late of 2010 and certainly not the three hours, or what ever ridiculous amount it was, of 2011!

As for life at home being different. After 15 years of never actually being home alone thanks to my favorite little four-legged friend, I found myself to be just that due to his passing a couple of days before I got home from my previous travels. While this may not sound like much to many people it did take longer than I would of liked to adjust, and not too sure if I actually have managed it just yet.

The brighter side of changes also includes the numbers in the house changing from the usual four into five for six months due to me being lucky enough to have a friend from England deciding on a change of scenery and coming to live in Australia, or more specifically... here. What I doubt will be surprising to anyone is that I think the family would be happy to ship me off and have her stay permanently, so I should be thankful there was never any sort of vote or ballot. While it was undoubtedly filled with ups and downs I do hope that overall it was a good six months for her.

During this time I got to be a tourist in my own state for the first time, which was great! And even though she's leaving, the 'tourist at home' side of me doesn't end just yet with another friend coming to stay starting in 2 days. this time from America. So it looks like I wont be moving back into my room just yet!

Even with such a small amount of time before i head off to America. I still think there is plenty of time for a lot to happen!

Hopefully I find myself with more to write come departure time, and lets hope it starts with more than me complaining about Qantas!

Take care all
